Word Ladder Unlimited is a free online word chain game with no once-a-day limit and no fixed destination. Each round starts with a newly generated word pair and a verified route, while still allowing you to discover a different valid route through the same dictionary.
Choose three-letter words for quick rounds, four-letter words for a balanced puzzle, or five-letter words for a wider search space. After finishing, start another ladder immediately and keep practising one-letter transformations.
- Read the endpoints. The first tile row is your start word; the labelled target is the word you need to reach.
- Enter one valid rung. Keep the same length and change exactly one letter from the current word.
- Submit and continue. Each accepted word becomes the next row until it matches the target.
- Compare with par. Par reflects a shortest route in this tool’s dictionary, but any valid completed route solves the round.

How to solve word ladders in fewer moves
Compare the start and target first and note which letter positions already match. A direct change is not always possible, so look for flexible bridge words that create several next moves. Common vowel changes can open one part of the graph, while a useful consonant change may make the final word reachable.
If you reach a dead end, use Undo instead of abandoning the round. You can also work backward mentally from the target: think of words one letter away from it, then search for a connection from your current rung.
